2nd STIGA Table Tennis ASEAN Club Championship 2026: Bandung Hosts Major Event, Sparking a Table Tennis Revival
Bandung - The city of Bandung has once again solidified its position as an international sports hub by hosting the 2nd STIGA Table Tennis ASEAN Club Championship (TTACC) 2026. Held at Graha Sanusi, Universitas Padjadjaran from June 11-13, 2026, the largest inter-club table tennis championship in Southeast Asia brings together 115 elite athletes from 14 teams representing six ASEAN nations: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Born from the vision of the Southeast Asian table tennis community, the tournament was conceived to be a sustainable inter-club competition, much like the Champions League in football. Yon Mardiyono, Chairman of the 2nd STIGA TTACC 2026 Organizing Committee, explained that the club-based format was chosen to facilitate athlete participation and bypass the bureaucratic hurdles often encountered when athletes represent their national flags. Beyond merely competing for a title, Yon described the event as the Green Table Conference a genuine grassroots movement ensuring the passion for table tennis remains alive amidst the ongoing dynamics and administrative disputes within national sports organizations.
The critical role of clubs as the driving force of sports development has garnered full support from the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). KOI Secretary General, Wijaya M. Noeradi, emphasized that the sports ecosystem must be built using a bottom-up approach. In sports governance, the driving force of sports within the Olympic movement is the club. Without strong roots, sports cannot stand firmly. Athletes require high-quality competitions as part of their developmental process toward major events, stated Wijaya.
In terms of competition, the atmosphere is guaranteed to be intensely fierce. In the main Mix Open category, Indonesian representatives will be severely tested by formidable foreign clubs such as UST Philippines, VietED Team, Hai Duong Team, Mobi Team (Vietnam), Sukma Johor (Malaysia), and Xiaobaiqiu (Singapore). A major highlight of the tournament is the presence of Thailand's table tennis star and ITTF world number 85, Orawan Paranang, who will be competing for Thonburi University.
As the host nation, Indonesia enjoys a significant strategic advantage. While countries are typically limited to sending a maximum of three clubs, Indonesia has the opportunity to field a larger contingent of top-seeded teams, including Arwana Jaya, SIM Lampung, SCM Lampung, Sukun Kudus, PRG Bali, and ONIC Sports. Yon considers this crucial for expanding the national athlete database. Providing more Indonesian players the chance to compete against top-tier Southeast Asian teams will make it significantly easier to gauge the national squad's strength ahead of multi-sport events like the SEA Games.
